A-Level Maths Tutoring

Mathematics is a difficult, complex and extremely enjoyable subject. My job is to help you or your child to reduce the difficulty and to understand the complexity. But, just as importantly, I strive to inspire in my students the same enjoyment I get out of solving those difficult and complex problems.

I think this latter point is crucial. I don’t know anybody who obtained an advanced understanding of Mathematics without a significant amount of work. The people I know with such an understanding have one thing in common: they enjoy it! They get a thrill when faced with a difficult problem, they feel good about themselves when they solve it and they feel empowered when they develop the kinds of skills which have created our modern, technological world.

It is imperative that my students understand that, by undertaking A-Level Mathematics, they are embarking on a journey which will change their lives. This is no exaggeration. They must understand that their career opportunities are limitless and that they can, quite literally, change the world. Thus, a large part of my teaching ethos is to throw in, at every opportunity, little gems of inspiration such as how the subject matter has transformed all of our lives and will continue to do so.

But, of course, no enjoyment will ever be experienced if one never gets to the stage of successfully solving problems. My approach to getting my students to this stage is thorough. I have a lot of experience tutoring A-level Maths students over the years and, while the good grades of my students are entirely their own, I have always received very flattering feedback.

Punctuating the Mathematics will be a focus on study skills and exam technique. Every piece of content we learn will be consciously considered as something we will have to return to come revision time. We will plan for this, developing concise summaries of material and a scheme for how to efficiently revise. We will break down the process of doing an exam, so that the student knows exactly how to get the most out of a stinker of an exam. I like to focus on the difficult questions anyway, so you’ll be very used to a stinker of a question!

A-Level Physics Tutoring

At some point you realised that Physics is far more interesting than calculating the density of a cube. The flip side of this is that it’s a lot more difficult too. I will help you cut through the daunting task of holding the entire Universe in your head for just long enough to excel in an exam.

Maybe you want to go on to do Physics at University, or maybe you want to do engineering. Perhaps, even, you chose Physics amongst your Humanities A-levels for the craic. Whatever your reasons, there’s at least a spark of interest there. We’re going to add fuel to that spark, because Physics is one of the most (if not the most) fascinating subjects to study. We will be channelling that romantic image of the eccentric scientist in their study solving problems by candlelight. This isn’t just an A-level, this is understanding truth about humanity’s place in a vast Universe.

Excited? Good. It is difficult. It wouldn’t be so fascinating if it were not. I want you to be enthralled by the subject content - this is the greatest motivation. But we have one objective and that is to get you succeeding under exam conditions. I will be finding the most concise way possible of getting the concepts, formulae and facts into your head. At each point we will be considering how what we are learning should be accounted for when you return to revise it. If you’re not doing A-level Maths alongside Physics, I will ensure that you have the necessary mathematical skills going into your exam. Exam technique and study skills will punctuate our journey into the Cosmos (it’s getting cheesy now, but it’s how I genuinely feel).

I look forward to helping you excel in your Physics A-level.

GCSE Maths Tutoring

A GCSE in Mathematics is a vitally important qualification. A person’s career opportunities are significantly hampered by its absence. Unfortunately, Mathematics is the most common subject for people to say they struggle with. I love nothing more than changing people’s perceptions on this.

I’m aware that at this level, Mathematics is not a choice - you can’t choose not to take it at GCSE. There will be those students who wish only to pass the bloody thing and there will be those who need a high grade to go on to do A-level. I, of course, tailor to both, but I will not allow any student to aim for just a pass. At whichever tier we are studying for, we will aim to master it all. Nobody expects 100% correct answers in an exam, but if we aim for it then disappointment often looks very good indeed.

Apart from getting into the details of the Maths, I will keep you or your child focused on the bigger picture. You will know exactly what you must remember, what will be given to you and how the content may be varied to challenge you. I will be guiding you through the revision process and we will be conscious of the revision and exam period as we work through the content. I will impart the many pearls of wisdom I have gained regarding study skills for Maths. With a focus on how to organise what we have learned on a topic, so that the revision of that material is as easy as possible, we will be developing skills which will serve us for many years to come.

As somebody who is extremely passionate about Mathematics, I hope to make studying this infamous subject an enjoyable, and fruitful, experience.

Guitar Lessons

Whether you’re just starting out, looking to break through to a more advanced level, or wish to undertake graded exams, I can help you. With over 20 years' experience playing (and 16 years teaching) guitar, I’ll have you strumming anything from Wonderwall to Classical Gas, in no time!

I have been teaching guitar for over 15 years, ever since I received my grade 8 in the electric guitar. Since then I have shifted more towards playing acoustic/Spanish guitar and fingerstyle pieces. So, whether you want to learn Heavy Metal, Rock/Pop, Classical or Jazz, I can teach you. It doesn’t even have to be guitar music, I have a pretty good repertoire of Electronic/Dance music I play. Whatever song you want to learn, in the majority of cases you can load it on YouTube and I’ll have it figured out in a few minutes. The more advanced pieces may take a bit longer, but no challenge is too extreme.

The temptation with many students is to try to run before they can walk. Certainly, a difficult piece, an Iron Maiden solo for example, can be worked towards in the long run if the student isn’t at that level yet. I will take you through the techniques involved and get you comfortable with them. But patience is the key to becoming better at anything. Patience and practice. I require of my students that they put in the practice to meet their expectations. It is completely pointless to pay for guitar lessons otherwise.

I prefer to teach techniques through actual music. I will take beginners through riffs and licks (guitar speak for bits of music) which demonstrate the key techniques in guitar playing. I will encourage my students, but not demand them, to learn scales and how to improvise lead lines on top of backing music. There is the opportunity to learn music theory here, but if it’s not what you want, we can stick to learning the songs you want to play.

Should you wish to take graded exams in guitar, I will take you through them. This is an excellent way to cover a lot of ground and force yourself to cover it well. It also looks very good on a CV! For those students doing qualifications, like GCSEs or A-Levels, in Music, I can assist you in the performance and composition aspects of these. There are significant qualifications to be gained from the things we love.
